THE BEST OF SINNIS (and other comments)
Our collection of thoughts during the
offseason.
SINNIS: According to free agent Roberto
Alomar's agent, he'll probably re-sign with the Whitesox.
ED: Fans of every other team
breathe a sigh of relief.
Sinnis: Free agent 3B-1B Todd
Zeile has had an audition for a studio job with ESPN, but also says he
wants to play another year.
ED: I can just see Zeile working
for like EVERY network known to man so that his announcing career
mirrors his playing career. And for a second there, I forgot
Bobby V went to Japan and thought ESPN got rid of Sutcliffe or Reynolds
or Brantley. Stupid getting my hopes up!
SINNIS: The Cardinals signed 37 players
to minor league contracts, including 1B Kevin Witt, 3B Scott Seabol, C
Mike Mahoney and Ps Allen Levrault, Randy Flores, Chad Paronto and
Jason Pearson.
ED: SCOTT SEABOL~!!! Aww, a
man who dreams of being Clay Bellinger.
SINNIS: The Indians put P Danys Baez
back on the 40 man roster and added SS Ivan Ochoa, 3B Corey Smith, OF
Grady Sizemore and P Mariano Gomez to it. According to GM Mark Shapiro,
Baez is "a unique situation" and the moves they've made taken him off
the roster and then putting him back on allow them to get around the
rule prohibiting salary cuts of more than 20%. When they try it, the
union will file a grievance.
PR: I guess Baez's "Unique
situation" was that he made more than the Indians wanted to give him.
SINNIS: According to the Chicago
Tribune, Cubs GM Jim Hendry is downplaying rumors that he's interested
in free agent P Sterling Hitchcock, but isn't it ruling it out.
ED: Makes sense. Wood,
Prior, Hitchco...Oh. Right.
SINNIS: According to the Boston Herald,
the Redsox are interested in free agent CF Mike Cameron, but it will
difficult for them to find a taker for Johnny Damon.
ED: You know Texas is sweating out
getting fucked on this somehow.
SINNIS: Free agent P David Wells had
back surgery on Tuesday.
ED: He could've got that stomach
shrinking surgery while he was at it.
ESPN INSIDER (as translated by Rippa):
The Phillies have told Kevin Millwood to go fuck himself by yanking
their offer to him off the table.
BB: YOU GOT STANTONED!!!!
ESPN INSIDER (as translated by Rippa):
The Tigers are also supposedly deciding between Miguel Tejada and Rich
Aurilia as their SS for next year.
BB: Do you think Miguel Tejada and
Rich Aurilia are okay with that? It's like saying the ugly girl is
choosing between the starting and backup
quarterback for her prom date.
ESPN INSIDER (as translated by Rippa):
Twins GM Terry Ryan denies a report that he's discussed a Jacque Jones
for Matt Mantei trade and says he hasn't spoken to the Diamondbacks at
all.
ED: At first I thought, "Man,
someone's getting fucked hard here." Then, when I couldn't figure
out whom was getting fucked, I realized it was fair. Ugly, but
fair.
SINNIS: According to ESPN's Jayson
Stark, while the Padres are rumored to be a possible frontrunner for
free agent P Greg Maddux, the team isn't interested in making an offer
to him until he indicates that he's interested in them.
ED: Jesus, they're like 6th
graders trying to go steady.
SINNIS: According to BP's Will Carroll,
"Roger Clemens will sign a one year deal with the Houston Astros," with
the amount expected to be in the $5-7 million range.
ED: Whoo-hoo! That should
make Lenny...err...Andy Pettite happy. Wonder if Roger will let
him have a rabbit this year?
SINNIS: The Reds invited Ps Dustin
Moseley, Chris Booker and Brian Shackelford to spring training.
BB: I've always wondered how the
invitation to spring training process works. Do you get a phone call
telling you to show up? Do they send you a
greeting card?
SINNIS: Twins P Horacio Estrada is
expected to miss the entire season, after breaking his leg in 4 place
during a car accident on Sunday.
BB: I think at some point of
multiple leg fractures, they just become superfluous. I'm not sure if
that point is 4, but it's close.
