Long Verison
This is why I hate coed softball. We had to forfeit the first game because you have to have a 5/5 split of
males/females. Well, 3 of
our girls showed up late.
Mind you, two of them lived 2 blocks away, came a half an hour before the game and said "Oh, I just
have to go home and shower
and change." I guess
forgetting that softball was an athletic event.
So anyway, we forfeit
the first game and just scrimmage until the girls show up. Then we begin the 2nd game. Our pitcher struck out the first
batter.... it went all
down hill from there.
We played one of those
professional softball lawyer teams. Where the team has been together for like 8 years and
has never lost a game. And
they were an entire team
of Kevin Youkilis'. They never swung and the ump was being amazingly anal-retentive with the
strike zone. So after
getting 2 outs in the
first inning - we gave up 14 runs. OH! Our league has the bizzaro rule that if a guy walks - everyone gets 2
bases. I guess because it
is supposed to be
embarrassing to walk a guy or something.
Meanwhile - all their girls could play. Or I should say werent afraid of the ball. Our girls - different story. We
had one girl who played
softball in school. So she
was good (and hefty). Our idiot manager though just kind arbitrarily put people in positions -
which included putting the
girl who couldn't catch
and was afraid of the ball at FIRST!!!!!!! (I was assigned third for the record).
So in between the parade of walks
- there were countless
errors. Twice I had my
throws dropped by our first baseman. Its pretty sad when I am the best athlete on the field. The defensive
highlight for me was I
made a running catch in
foul territory, against the fence on a pop out. That is when I proceeded to peg the guy in the head
with my throw because I
gunned it right down the
line.
Back to the game - so they score
14 in the first. Since we
had never played and
because our manager is an idiot - he just randomly put people in batting slots (it had to be boy/girl). I get
slotted into 9th. No
chance I am batting in the
two innings. So the 2nd rolls around and the other team scores ANOTHER 14 runs. The game has
been going on for nearly a
hour. So there is no way
we are playing a full game. It was getting annoying as the ump refused to call strikes - even
though the other team was
up 25. And the fact that
they were still taking pitches pissed me off. Not as much as the guy who legged out a Inside the Park HR
and ran through two
coaches stop signs in the
process (All the while yelling "FUCK NO! I ain't stopping).
I finally get to bat in the Top of the 3th. I work the count full, and if the game was close, I so would have
drawn the walk. Instead, I
rip a bullet up the middle
and don't stop until I get to 2nd because I saw I immediately hit it two of their replacement girls.
No chance they are throwing
me out. I am 2nd, fending
off the impending heart attack, when with two outs, the only other decent guy on our team lashes a
single. Since its two outs
and we are down by about a
million, I rumble around third and score.
By the time the Top of the 4th comes, we have taken so long they are calling the game after our a bat. So, we
actually get a rally
going. My turn comes to
bat.... and I am replaced so some other guy who hadn't played at all can bat. At least, he drove in a run or I
would have been really
pissed.
There is a chance I am going to be
moved to first for the next
game because I am one of
about 4 people on the team who can catch. But I forgot how much I hate playing co-ed sports as my teams
always have the girls who
claim they will play but
never actually show up.
So very bitter.
